play

Do you want to move to New Jersey, but can’t decide on a town or city? An important factor to consider is the safety of the area. SafeWise, a site that contextualizes national crime and safety trends, conducts independent research, and even tests security systems, has compiled a list of the top 10 safest cities in New Jersey for 2024.

The methodology consisted of property and violent crime figures from FBI statistics, population data, and SafeWise’s own “State of Safety” survey (all of these methods were not reported). The company calls FBI crime data “the backbone of our reporting” because it relies on voluntary, self-reported information that cities report through the FBI Summary Reporting System and the National Incident-Based Reporting System.

After their studies were conducted, the company said the safest cities in New Jersey are:

  1. Municipality of Vernon
  2. Bernard’s community
  3. Jefferson community
  4. New Milford
  5. Hillsborough Municipality
  6. West Milford Township
  7. Dumont
  8. Municipality of Denville
  9. Municipality of Sparta
  10. Jackson township

Crime Rates in NJ for 2024

New Jersey is considered one of the safest states in the country, according to a recent survey. According to SafeWise, the Garden State has lower crime rates than national averages, specifically the ninth lowest violent crime rate and 10th lowest property crime rate in the country.

This is consistent with other surveys conducted this year, including a Forbes Advisor survey.

New Jersey has a violent crime rate of 2.8 per 1,000 residents, according to SafeWise. The property crime rate per 1,000 people in the state is 15.7.

Despite previous surveys showing many New Jersey residents concerned about crime in their state, the latest survey shows a decrease in fear among locals. The number of respondents who worry about their safety on a daily basis has fallen to 45%, down 18% from the previous year, according to SafeWise. Many people in New Jersey are still concerned about their overall safety, as the survey also shows that 46% of respondents feel safe in the state.

NJ cities are also the safest in the country

A separate study by SafeWise ranked the top 100 safest cities in the country. The company used a similar methodology when analyzing FBI crime report statistics and population data, but this time no other factors were included. Like the Safest Cities in New Jersey study, the data was from 2022, which is the most recent analysis available.

Jackson Township was ranked as the safest city in the country in the 2024 list. Eight other New Jersey cities were in the top 100, including Lakewood Township at nine and North Bergen at 21.

Other cities that made the list were:

25. Parsippany-Troy Hills Municipality

41. Borough of Evesham

46. Toms River Township

64. Bloomfield

67. Municipality of Gloucester

79. Municipality of East Brunswick

The study shows that the company has set a “minimum population threshold of 25,000 residents. Cities that fell below the population threshold were excluded.” Some cities on New Jersey’s list did not meet the population threshold for the national list. Cities that did not provide their crime data to the FBI were excluded.
