Anna “Anne” Marie Turnbull passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at the age of 96, after a full life, including many years on the shores of Colpoys Bay.
Anne was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1927 to parents Dmytro and Katherine Kowalchuk. Anne was a great help on the family farm where, in addition to minks and foxes, vegetables were also grown. She learned to drive her father’s truck in the 1930s, at a time when women were not allowed to drive.
When a Jersey cow on the farm needed medical attention, she met the love of her life, attending veterinarian Robert “Bob” Blake Turnbull, who would later become her husband. They moved to Ontario in the 1950s and raised their two sons, Richard and Ken. Anne assisted Bob in his veterinary activities, answering the telephone and speaking with salespeople.
Knowing Anne, I enjoyed her unique laugh and many classic expressions such as: ‘You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink!’, ‘That’s just not cricket’ and ‘Ole’ pappy , time picks in my pocket. ”.
Her dedication to the Wiarton Hospital Auxiliary was inspiring. She volunteered for 35 years, first as a candy striper, then in the gift shop, followed by selling cards in the supermarket.
She loved tending her many gardens, where she grew vegetables and flowers and made delicious homemade pickled beets and jam. She was strong, stubborn and fiery, splitting her own wood into her seventies and taking the stairs two at a time into her late eighties and throwing a snowball at you if you ever doubted her abilities!
Anne is survived by her son Richard, daughter-in-law Diane, grandchildren Kevin (Kelly) and Lesley (Paul) and her five great-grandchildren Lucas, Miles, Ozzie, Willow and Van.
She was predeceased by her husband Bob, son Ken and brother Stan.
Thank you to the wonderful staff at Brucelea Haven Nursing Home, HCCSS, Alzheimer Society Grey-Bruce, Dr. Diodati, Maureen Smith and Wray Lamont who helped care for Anne when she needed it most.
The family would like to hear your personal stories about Anne and encourage you to post them on her memorial page at www.cameronfuneralhomes.com.
A celebration of life will take place in Wiarton at the end of May. Details, when available, will be announced by Cameron’s and published in the Wiarton Echo.
A private family burial was held at the United Church Cemetery, Grand Bend.
As expressions of sympathy, donations to Wiarton Hospital Auxiliary or Brucelea Haven Activation Fund are encouraged by the family. Donations and condolences may be made online at www.cameronfuneralhomes.com
