IAS officer Supriya Sahu shared a video of a unique polling booth in Tamil Nadu, which has attracted a lot of attention online. Located in Tirupathur District, the booth stands out for its innovative and eco-friendly features, highlighting its efforts towards sustainability and environmental awareness.

The booth, described as a ‘green polling booth’, was set up by the District Collector in collaboration with volunteers from the TN Climate Change Mission. There are about 10 similar stands across the state. What makes these cabins distinctive is the use of natural materials for shade and decoration.

To counter the scorching heat, coconut and bamboo leaves are ingeniously used to provide shade, creating a refreshing and eco-friendly environment for the voters. In addition, banana and palm leaves were used to welcome voters, adding a traditional touch to the electoral process.

Additionally, the signage at these booths is made from handwritten fabric banners, which avoids the use of flex materials, promoting sustainability and reducing plastic waste.

The video shared by Supriya Sahu garnered widespread appreciation for the innovative approach in setting up polling booths. It demonstrates the importance of integrating environmentally friendly practices into daily activities. Voting took place in the first phase of the Lok Sabha elections for 102 seats spread across 21 states and Union Territories.
