Leanne met her husband, Allen, in 1979 at the Northern Saskatchewan Winter Games. They started dating in 1983. After a few years of dating, they married on May 18, 1985 in Sturgis, Saskatchewan. They settled in La Ronge, Saskatchewan for a few years, with Leanne working at a local bank and Allen continuing his flying career. With both looking for career advancement, Leanne and Allen made the joint decision to pursue a college degree at the University of North Dakota, where they spent the next four years.
