Two teenage Premier League footballers have been arrested and questioned over alleged rape

The player was questioned on suspicion of assault and complicity in a rape before being allowed to leave the stadium after a brief interview.

However, the 19-year-old was arrested later that evening and spent the night in the cells.

He was later questioned by detectives under caution.

His teammate, who is also 19, was questioned on suspicion of rape after he was arrested the next day.

According to police, the two have been released on bail pending further investigation.

It is understood the alleged victim contacted police hours after the rape on Friday and filed a formal complaint.

A police spokesperson said: “Officers have arrested two men following a report of a rape.

“A 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault and complicity in rape. A second 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of rape.

“Both men have now been released on police bail.”

A source said The sun: “One of the players was in the club’s stadium. The police arrived and wanted to speak to him.

“He was taken to a private room in the ground and spoken to by police.

“The player left the club with another person and was formally arrested by police later that evening.”

A club spokesman said: “As the matter is now in the hands of police, the club will make no further comment at this stage.”

The Premier League has been hit by a series of high-profile sex scandals in recent years.

Man United striker Mason Greenwood, 22, was banned in 2022 after being arrested for attempted rape.

The case was later dropped and he is now on loan to Spanish side Getafe.

Former Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy, 29, was acquitted of multiple rapes last year after two trials.

He is now on the French side of Lorient.

Their and other cases prompted the Premier League to launch sexual consent classes for all players.
