River Island receives approval from the Science Based Target initiative

The retailer has committed to long- and short-term emissions reduction targets with the SBTi, an international organization that supports companies towards a target to reach net zero by 2040.

River Island’s targets include: reducing absolute scope 1 and 2 (direct) greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2030, compared to the 2019 base year; complete neutralization of residual emissions by 2030 to achieve net zero direct emissions (scope 1 and 2); and a reduction of absolute scope 3 (indirect) greenhouse gas emissions by 30% in 2032, compared to the base year 2021.

It has also committed to the SBTi target of net zero carbon emissions by the end of 2040 by reducing absolute Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions by 90%, from the base year 2021, and to deploy 100% renewable electricity annually by 2030 to buy.

José Arguedas, head of sustainability at River Island, said: “Tackling climate change requires ambitious action from the retail sector and our validated, science-based targets demonstrate our commitment to building a sustainable economy by not doing what is easy, but what is necessary.”
