Texas Spring Game: Internet Mocks Arch Manning’s 75-yard TD Pass to DeAndre Moore Jr., Exposing Longhorns Defensive Vulnerability

The Texas Longhorns spring game spotlighted the throwing talent of an already rising star QB in Arch Manning. During the Orange and White’s spring game, the 18-year-old delivered a number of impressive throws, including three touchdown throws. As for Longhorns starting QB Quinn Ewers, he only played one drive as HC Steve Sarkisian wanted to spotlight Manning and freshman Trey Owens.

During the game, Arch Manning completed 19 of 25 passes for 355 yards, including two 75-yard TD throws. On the other hand, Owens also had an excellent performance, completing 14 of 21 passes for 228 yards and three touchdowns. The foul may have stolen the viewers’ attention, but it paved the way for criticism on the defensive end.

Nothing is without some form of criticism. So when PFF College uploaded a clip of Arch Manning’s 75-yard throw to sophomore WR DeAndre Moore and captioned it: “Arch Manning puts on a show during the Texas Spring Game”, the criticism followed. One user commented: “That was baaaad D from the CB… I hope the kid is okay, but let’s not condone this.”

During the first quarter of the spring game, Texas’ vulnerability on defense was exposed when Manning threw an easy pass that went more than 50 yards downfield. And that’s far from the only revelation of the Longhorns’ defensive weakness. Manning secured another 75-yard touchdown with a throw to receiver Isaiah Bond. Another TD came from Manning’s pass to RB Jaydon Blue. Manning and the receivers certainly deserve credit for dominating the offense, but fans are shaking their heads at the defense.

The defense did not meet the expectations of the spectators. One user trolled the defense, saying: “Hahaha. Bro Texas may have the worst secondary in CFB. I haven’t seen a single highlight from this game where the DB is undercooked.”

Another expressed concern about the defense, asking: “Who is the defensive coach?

Even the piece was called into question when one user posted: “On every play the WR was wide open?

The weakness of the defense also made Arch Manning’s talent irrelevant, with one user commenting: “Lol, that’s a 39 yard lob to a wide open man. I can link that to my left foot.”

Another person wrote: “I could have thrown that. The man was wide open 5 yards away.”

Texas may have valuable offensive weapons, but with a dismal defense like we saw in the highlights, the 2024 season may not be as fruitful as last season.
