An Australian tourist’s hilarious toilet request during a visit to China

Traveling to a new country can involve many learning curves, but Australian woman Samantha Harrison didn’t expect to learn how to use a toilet during her recent trip abroad.

The Queensland business owner flew to China with a group last week, and while enjoying lunch in Beijing, she was busy with a ‘tutorial’ on how to best use the country’s squat toilets, which are often found are in many parts of Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

Describing the hilarious encounter to Yahoo News Australia from abroad, Harrison admitted it was all “so funny” and “wholesome”. She was using the bathroom at a restaurant with her friend when they realized “we don’t know how to do it right” without “getting splashed.”

Aussies get ‘toilet instruction’ from a local woman

A viral video on Harrison’s TikTok page shows the pair laughing hysterically with a local woman who they asked to show them the correct way to use the toilet. The Queenslander told Yahoo they asked the woman – who had been cleaning the toilets – what to do to ensure they didn’t make a mess or get their clothes wet, but the language barrier meant they had to demonstrate instead.

“We tried to ask through actions how she uses the toilet,” Harrison said. “And so we took her into the restroom and showed her how to hold a squat, and asked her if we were doing it right.

“She said, ‘No, no’ and squatted (showed us how to) but with her knees together. It was so funny because I can’t squat like she can, apparently the way we squatted was wrong.

“We couldn’t figure out how to squat without getting it all over the floor.”

Toilet request goes viral on social media

The toilet ‘tutorial’ video has since been viewed more than five million times on TikTok. Harrison said she “definitely didn’t think it would go viral.”

“I feel like laughter is the universal language. Everyone laughs and can relate,” she said. “You can really hear (the local woman’s) happiness and laughter. It feels like a wholesome video.”

Many in the comments admitted they also struggled to get used to squatting or dropping toilets while traveling abroad. “Omg this was SO HARD when I was in China,” said one.

“I stopped wearing pants completely because I couldn’t understand how they would pee with their pants down and it wouldn’t go all the way over their jeans,” she added.

While others commented on the “genuine laughter” in the video.

“The way they make fun of each other is like they’ve known each other for a long time,” someone commented. “My new goal in life is to make someone laugh so hard when we don’t even speak the same language,” said another.

Others were baffled by the style of the toilet, admitting they had never seen it before, and also wondering how they work.
