Kate Beckinsale reveals she can’t bear to take down Christmas trees because they remind her of her late stepdad

Kate Beckinsale can’t bear to take down her Christmas bushes as she decorated them with her late stepfather.

The 50-year-old actress was left devastated when Roy Battersby died on January 10 at the age of 87, and on Saturday (20Apr24) marked what would have been his 50th birthday with an emotional story in which she opened up about the influence of her continued sadness at his passing.

She stated on Instagram alongside a series of photos of filmmaker Roy and his last birthday they spent together: “The birthday we didn’t know was your last birthday.

“Right now there may be no FaceTime. Over the course of my evening, watching you open your presents. Nobody bought things with extra pleasure.

“I can’t take away my Christmas bushes – they were the last Christmas bushes I will decorate with you on this planet.

“This birthday/not a birthday, Christmas/not Christmas in April. Oh Roy, oh God, I miss you.”

Kate recently returned from hospital amid undisclosed health issues.

Her stepfather – who her actress mother Judy Loe, 77, married after the loss of life of Kate’s TV actor father Richard Beckinsale, was killed by a heart attack in March 1979 aged 31 – died after a “transient ” disease.

In the photos shared by Kate on Saturday, Roy may be seen smiling as he strolls past the greenhouses.

There was also a photo of him trying on a birthday card at a desk while surrounded by playing cards.

Kate also shared a photo of herself on Instagram in what appeared to be her living room – among a bunch of giant pink and white decorated Christmas bushes.

She also reposted the message: “Due to private causes I’m going to scream.”

Kate introduced Roy’s loss of life in an announcement on her Instagram Tales in January, saying: “It is with great sadness that the family of film and TV director Roy Battersby announces the information about his latest loss of life after a short period of illness.

“He passed away peacefully on January 10, 2024, in Los Angeles, surrounded by family, at the age of 87.

“The funeral could take place in London, details must be taken into account.”

Kate’s Instagram bio includes a hyperlink to people devastated by the loss of a pet’s life – and the quote from Khushwant Singh’s novel ‘Within the Firm of Ladies’: “A fatherless woman thinks that all problems are achievable and that nothing is protected.”
